Constant Figures
Video, 2025
This project was born from a quiet observation of the interplay between water and light. I found myself captivated by a simple video in which the movement of water appeared to dance, engaging with the rays of light that touched its surface. In this rhythmic exchange, I began to perceive bodies in constant flux—silhouettes merging, separating, and reforming in a kind of visual ballet. Guided by this perception, I began digitally painting fragments of bodies over the video, tracing forms that felt both fluid and mutable. My inspiration was drawn from Greek and Roman sculptures of hermaphroditic figures—bodies imbued with ambiguity and grace—whose fluid identities echoed my own visual inquiries. As the project evolved, I manipulated the imagery further: altering colors, layering textures, and introducing new visual elements. Yet, I felt compelled to move beyond the screen, to physically engage with the image. I projected the video into space and used my own shadow as part of the composition, merging with the light, disrupting it, becoming it. Through this act, I sought to modify my own silhouette, to forge a new body—one that resists fixity, that transforms continuously. This exploration led me to research texts and poems that contemplate the transient nature of the body. It was during this phase that I encountered From Constant Changes Figures by Lyn Hejinian—a poem that instantly resonated with the spirit of my work. A ballet of transformation, where forms dissolve and reconstitute in an endless cycle of becoming.
